The Spanish team, comprising Fernando Verdasco and Anabel Medina, opened with a victory at this year’s Hopman Cup, overcoming the host nation Australia by two matches to one on the second day of the competition for national mixed teams that opened the season in the city of Perth.
In the first knock-out round of Group B, held on the hard indoor court at urswood Dome, Spanish victory came in the doubles match that pitted erdasco and Medina against local pair Hewitt and Gajdosova, who they efeated in a super-tie-break by 11-9 in the third set after a very equal 3-6, 6-
3 in the first two. The round had opened with Jarmila Gajdosova beating Anabel edina 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, while Fernando Verdasco, who we saw at the Valencia pen 500 once again this year, put Spain on an equal footing with Australia efore the doubles match by beating the erstwhile world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, in three sets: 6-3, 3-6, 7-5.
